The Yards Park in Capitol Riverfront is one of the fastest developing areas in Washington DC. Formerly, the area was home to the Navy Yard Annex and one of the first industrial areas of Washington. Now, the park hosts festivals and cult events besides offering a hub for tourists to while away with outdoor recreational activities when on tours of Washington DC.
Picnic and Recreation in Green Space
The grassy area in the park makes for an ideal place for laying down blankets and enjoying picnics with kids. If you did not have time to pack lunch, there are restaurants, or even a supermarket nearby from where you can buy food. For outdoor recreation, also bring kites, balls, or Frisbees and let your kids enjoy the trip to the fullest.
Explore the Boardwalk and Pedestrian Bridge
The park is home to a bridge, which crosses over the Anacostia River and canal basin. Walk across it with kids or friends for a sweeping view of the scenery in the Yards Park. The scenic bridge is best captured in a high-resolution DSLR camera, so do not forget to pack it in your bags when coming here. Once you cross the picturesque bridge, stroll along the boardwalk in the park for seeing the riverfront in all its beauty.
Play in the Waterfall or Pool
Water is one of the sights to enjoy in the park. On the lower level, canal basin gives an area where kids can splash around in the water. It is only a few inches deep, which makes it safe for small kids who are matured beyond the age of potty. Some concrete disks are placed all through the basin, so kids can jump into the water so long as they feel safe. There is even a waterfall gushing into the small pool on the lower level.
Have Food in the Restaurants
The Yards Park has several restaurants in its vicinity, including sandwich chains, Korean restaurants, and so forth. It also has Ice Cream Jubilee, which often finds a place in the list of 10 best ice cream shops in the District, so check it out to give your kids a sweet treat.
Attend an Annual or Year-round Event
On select days in the summertime, Yards Park hosts festivals aimed at kids. Still, if you cannot make it here during warm seasons, look up for a schedule of music concerts or other events in the park. If you are arriving here on a Washington DC tour on December 31, you can participate in the end of the year festivity titled Noon Year’s Eve from morning until noontime.
